We're working on a companion book, Tips for New RVers: Livin' the Dream, which will focus on many of the day to day aspects of RV Life such as staying organized, cooking, dealing with homesickness and managing finances and insurance. We hope to have this second book available by year-end 2015.

Ocean Point - Poetic Inspiration

Below are pictures of Ocean Point, which is located in East Boothbay, Maine at the entrance to Linekin Bay. These pictures were taken when we stayed in the area in our RV in June, 2012. We actually stayed at a campground in Damariscotta, but spent a good deal of our time over in Boothbay because Melissa has a lifelong connection to the place and we had our own home there for seven years.


From Melissa:

I have been coming to East Boothbay on family vacations ever since I was six years old. I dreamed of having my own place there, and in 1993, Dick and I bought a beautiful old Victorian home on School Street. The house dated back to 1892, having been built by a sailmaker named Charles Seavey. His daughter, Sarah, married an Adams of Adams Shipbuilders, which built four and five-masted schooners at their facility right on School Street. In that location now is Hodgdon Yachts. At the other end of the street is Washburn-Doughty, which is a world-famous maker of tugboats. The tradition of shipbuilding in this town and on this particular street has been continuous since the 1700's.

Our house on School Street had a small red barn that still had a three-seater outhouse in it! It also had a small carriage house that we turned into an art gallery where we sold Dick's paintings and my photography. We lived there for seven years before we moved out west to Arizona and later to New Mexico. I don't seem to have a picture of the house on this computer, but I'll keep looking and maybe I'll be able to dig one up.

Here are the photos of Ocean Point. You can see why it inspired me to write a poem about it!!

I remember playing on these rocks when I was six years old! I don't have a picture from then, but here's one of me sitting on "my rocks" when we were there in 2012.

We vacationed there every year when I was young, and later we had a home in East Boothbay. On Sunday mornings, Dick and I liked to go to the East Boothbay General Store to get coffee and a pecan sticky bun.

I remember going into this store when I was little. It's changed hands many times in its history, of course, but in my lifetime there has always been a store there. Now they make great food in addition to the usual general store stuff. Click on the photo and you'll see what they offer now.

Then we'd take those up to the point and spend the whole day just sitting and looking.

It's truly one of my favorite little pieces of the planet - when I'm there, I feel like I am Home. Here are shots of what you see when you are sitting on Ocean Point.

We are so grateful for the warm support you have shown for our book. We spent just under a year as full-time RVers and it was the best year of our lives - challenges and all. We are glad that our experiences and learning are now helping others enter the RV life with confidence. 

Sure, there's a lot to learn, but believe me, a year on the road, covering tens of thousands of miles, seeing this beautiful continent with its amazing sights and glorious beauty, meeting great people and having experiences - some wonderful and others challenging - will teach you more than you ever imagined about yourself and about life. So get out there and start your own adventure!

Enjoy the holiday, cherish your loved ones 

and sprinkle a little kindness on everyone you meet!

About Our Book

When we got the RVing bug, we were total Newbies. We'd never had an RV, a camper or even a tent for that matter! Now we are experienced RVers who lived and traveled full-time in our Class C that we named the Dreamcatcher, figured things out as we went along, had good days and bad days and are willing to share what we learned so that maybe you can avoid a few mistakes and generally stay out of trouble, divorce court and jail.

Our book introduces new, inexperienced and potential RVers to basic aspects of RV life. It's not a detailed, nitty-gritty how-to book; rather it’s meant to give readers an overview and answer a variety of basic questions about life on the road. The idea is to help you get your feet wet before you dive into the deep water!We hope it will help to shorten your learning curve, lessen your fears and entertain you a little bit too. Most of all, we hope it encourages you to catch your own RV dreams and make them come true.

So we started to educate ourselves and found that there was a ton of great information out there about RVing from a variety of sources. In fact, there was SO much that we felt completely overwhelmed. We found ourselves getting bogged down with detailed technical information that we weren't ready for and couldn't absorb, when what we really needed was a an overview and some general information to give us an idea of what to expect out on the road. So, now that we are experienced RVers who have lived and traveled full-time in our motorhome, we decided to write the book that we would have liked to read when we were starting out.

Our book is targeted to new, inexperienced and potential RVers. It's meant to give readers an overview and answer a variety of basic questions about RV life. The idea is to help you get your feet wet before you dive into the deep water. We also hope you'll be entertained and maybe even chuckle a time or two!
